The lighthouse keepers’ houses stood empty once the lights were automated. The same happened to the officers’ quarters and the mine workshop on Bergholmen when the armed forces pulled out of Drøbaksundet. Kystled Oslofjorden is the scheme that lets them out again, and anyone can book.

It is run by Oslofjordens Friluftsråd, the regional outdoor recreation council, together with around twenty voluntary organisations, and it started in 1997. Fyrsteilene off Nesodden was the first cabin. By the summer of 2026 the network counts 75 cabins once the sites along the Halden waterway and Vansjø are included, and Bukkenes in Sarpsborg was the latest to join. 40 of the cabins sit on the Oslo fjord itself.

The buildings are what makes the scheme worth knowing about. You sleep in a lighthouse on Gullholmen, in the old village shop on Langåra, in a listed fog-bell station on Søndre Langåra, or in the officers’ quarters on Bergholmen. Standards vary sharply from one cabin to the next: some have running water and a shower, others a well and a gas ring. Bedding you bring yourself, and on several of the islands you should expect to carry both food and drinking water ashore from the boat.

Prices sit with the operator and change from year to year. So does the season: most of the cabins are open from late April to early October. The whole year’s calendar goes up on a single date in February, and anyone who is an «Oslofjordvenn» gets in a day ahead of everyone else.
